{"id":2222,"date":"2026-08-28T22:43:39","date_gmt":"2026-08-28T22:43:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/museum.wiserighteous.org\/?page_id=2222"},"modified":"2026-08-30T17:51:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-30T17:51:29","slug":"critical-reflection-method","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/museum.wiserighteous.org\/index.php\/critical-reflection-method\/","title":{"rendered":"Critical Reflection Method"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learn to Question Assumptions, Examine Evidence, and Reconsider Your Thinking<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/museum.wiserighteous.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/The_Weight_of_Choice.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Historical learning becomes more meaningful when you do more than accept an explanation. <strong>Critical Reflection<\/strong> invites you to examine what you think, why you think it, what assumptions influence your thinking, what evidence supports your conclusions, and whether another interpretation may be possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is not simply to criticize an idea or disagree with someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is to develop the ability to <strong>examine your own thinking carefully and fairly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Critical Reflection can help develop critical thinking, intellectual humility, evidence-based reasoning, perspective-taking, ethical reasoning, and the ability to revise conclusions when new evidence or perspectives become available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is Critical Reflection?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Critical Reflection is a structured learning method that asks learners to examine their assumptions, beliefs, interpretations, evidence, reasoning, and perspectives rather than accepting them automatically.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of asking only:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote style=\"background-image:var(--wp--preset--gradient--gradient-4);\" class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow has-background\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat do I think?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Critical Reflection asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote style=\"background-image:var(--wp--preset--gradient--gradient-4);\" class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow has-background\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhy do I think this\u2014and what might cause me to reconsider?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This distinction is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People do not interpret information in a completely neutral way. A new piece of evidence or a stronger interpretation may cause you to return to an earlier step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1 \u2014 NOTICE: Identify Your Initial Understanding<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Begin by recognizing what you currently think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What do I think happened?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is my initial interpretation?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What conclusion am I already leaning toward?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What reaction did I have when I encountered this information?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What seems obvious to me?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What am I taking for granted?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not immediately try to prove yourself right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, identify your starting point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learning Challenge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Complete this statement:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cMy initial understanding is\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then complete:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote style=\"background-image:var(--wp--preset--gradient--gradient-4);\" meaningfully examine your thinking until you recognize what your thinking currently is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2 \u2014 IDENTIFY: Separate Evidence, Interpretation, and Assumption<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most important skills in Critical Reflection is recognizing that <strong>evidence, interpretation, and assumption are not the same thing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Evidence<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What information can be supported by a reliable source or observable record?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Interpretation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What meaning are you assigning to that evidence?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Assumption<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What are you accepting without having fully established it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Evidence:<\/strong> A person repeatedly performed a particular action.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Interpretation:<\/strong> The repeated action may demonstrate persistence.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Assumption:<\/strong> The person always acted from the same motivation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first statement may be directly supported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second is an interpretation that should be justified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The third may require additional evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Critical Reflection teaches you to distinguish among them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3 \u2014 QUESTION: Challenge Your First Interpretation<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you identify your initial interpretation, question it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote style=\"background-image:var(--wp--preset--gradient--gradient-4);\" class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow has-background\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHow do I know?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What evidence supports this interpretation?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What evidence might challenge it?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What assumptions am I making?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Am I relying on incomplete information?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Am I confusing correlation with causation?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Am I judging the past using present-day information?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Am I assuming that one person&#8217;s experience represents everyone?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Am I ignoring information that does not fit my conclusion?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The purpose is not to create doubt for its own sake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The purpose is to determine whether your conclusion is <strong>well supported<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 4 \u2014 EXAMINE: Evaluate the Evidence<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now examine the evidence more carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Source<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where did the information come from?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reliability<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How trustworthy is the source?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Relevance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does the evidence actually address the question?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Completeness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What information may be missing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Context<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What circumstances surrounded the evidence?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Consistency<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does other evidence support or contradict it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Limitations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What can the evidence tell us\u2014and what can it not tell us?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strong Critical Reflection does not simply collect more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It asks whether the information is <strong>relevant, reliable, sufficient, and appropriately interpreted<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 5 \u2014 CHALLENGE: Consider Alternative Perspectives<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A conclusion can appear obvious when we examine it from only one perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now deliberately consider another viewpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How might another person interpret this situation?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What would someone who disagrees with me say?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What information might they emphasize?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What experiences could lead them to a different conclusion?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What part of their argument might be reasonable?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What evidence would strengthen or weaken their interpretation?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not have to accept every alternative perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is to understand it well enough to evaluate it fairly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Intellectual Humility<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A strong critical thinker can say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote style=\"background-image:var(--wp--preset--gradient--gradient-4);\" class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow has-background\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI disagree, but I understand why someone might reach a different conclusion.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even more importantly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote style=\"background-image:var(--wp--preset--gradient--gradient-4);\" class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow has-background\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI may need to reconsider part of my conclusion.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 6 \u2014 RECONSIDER: Test Your Conclusion<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After examining evidence, assumptions, and perspectives, return to your original conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote style=\"background-image:var(--wp--preset--gradient--gradient-4);\" class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow has-background\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cDo I still believe what I believed at the beginning?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are several possible outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keep<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The evidence continues to support your original conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Modify<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your original conclusion remains partly valid, but needs qualification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Expand<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You discover additional factors that make the issue more complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reject<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The evidence or reasoning no longer supports your original conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Suspend Judgment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is not enough reliable evidence to reach a responsible conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The last option is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the most intellectually responsible conclusion is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote style=\"background-image:var(--wp--preset--gradient--gradient-4);\" class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow has-background\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI do not know yet.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 7 \u2014 REFINE: Develop a Better Understanding<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Critical Reflection should produce more than doubt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It should produce a <strong>better-reasoned understanding<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Complete:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote style=\"background-image:var(--wp--preset--gradient--gradient-4);\" class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow has-background\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cAt first, I thought\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cAfter examining the evidence, I now think\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote
